Breakups, Separation & Divorce

Going through a breakup

A breakup can create a big hole in your life, and leave the future feeling blank and uncertain.

Someone who was an important part of your life suddenly isn’t there anymore. You might keep thinking about them, miss things about them, replay memories or have to stop yourself from reaching out.

You didn’t just lose the relationship you had — you lost the future you imagined with them, and the person who shared and witnessed that period of your life. Breakups aren’t always treated with the same seriousness as divorce, particularly when you weren’t married. But you don’t need to have been married for someone to have been the person you thought you would spend your life with.

The uncertainty can be terrifying. What will happen now? Will you find someone else? Will you be happy again? It can feel like starting from scratch, with no guarantees.

Going through a divorce

Divorce can mean taking apart a life you once built around being together.

You committed to someone, built a life together and perhaps created your own family unit. For however many years, you were a team and structured your life around the two of you. Now you’re having to work out what your life looks like when it’s you on your own.

Even when divorce is something you want, it can be messy and exhausting to go through. There are legal and practical things to sort out, lives to separate and people to tell — all while dealing with their questions, sympathy or reactions.

Something that was supposed to be forever has ended. And amongst the mess of actually getting divorced, you may be wondering what this means for you now — and what you want for yourself going forwards.
