Missing the Past
I work with all the things we lose in life. These are some of the experiences I commonly support clients with in therapy.
Living with loss
Not everything we grieve involves someone dying. Have you ever found yourself missing a part of your life that’s over? A relationship. A job. Someone who moved away. Your youth, the way you used to look or even the person you used to be. Sometimes it’s the future you thought you were going to have.
These experiences can be overlooked because there isn’t always a clear ending or something tangible to grieve. Sometimes they’re described as ambiguous losses. Life may have moved on, but that doesn’t mean you’ve stopped missing what was.
Missing what never was
Do you ever wish your life had been different? Can you miss something you never had?
You might look back and wish you’d had a different childhood, or received more of the love, care or acceptance you needed. Maybe you think about missed opportunities, what you could have done or become, or the future you thought you would have.
There may be nothing tangible to point to, but that doesn’t make the loss any less real. You can still find yourself wondering how things might have been different, or wishing you could have had what other people seemed to have.
